The Backlash Against Globalization

In recent years, the world has seen a rising backlash against globalization. This article reviews nature, causes, and consequences of globalization backlash. It shows that, contrary to popular narrative, is not associated with large swing in public opinion but rather result its politicization. The increasing influence globalization-skeptic actors resulted more protectionist, isolationist, nationalist policies, some which fundamentally threaten pillars contemporary international order. Both material nonmaterial causes drive backlash, these interact mediate each other. are shaped by responses societal actors, national governments, policy makers. These can either yield reinforce global or push back it. Understanding dynamics will be an important task for future research.
